Perfect Day at CocoCay: A Bahamas Cruise Stop Guide

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's private island in the Berry Islands and the headline stop on a Bahamas cruise from Miami. This guide covers which Miami ships call, the roughly 6-minute walk from the pier, what is free (beaches, Oasis Lagoon, the tram, included dining) and what costs extra (Thrill Waterpark, Hideaway Beach, Coco Beach Club, cabanas). It also walks through how to plan the day hour by hour and how the island compares with the other private islands on Bahamas cruises from Miami.

Quick answer CocoCay at a glance

Perfect Day at CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's private island in the Berry Islands, and there is no admission fee to step ashore. Most ships dock for about 8 to 10 hours, the walk from the ship to the Arrivals Plaza takes about 6 minutes, and a free pier tram also runs. Beaches, Oasis Lagoon, the kids' aqua parks, beach chairs, showers and unlimited dining at five island food spots are all included. Thrill Waterpark, Hideaway Beach, Coco Beach Club, cabanas and water sports cost extra, with prices shown in My Royal Cruise rather than published on the island page.

Key takeaways

What Perfect Day at CocoCay Is

A private Royal Caribbean destination in the Bahamas that cruise guests reach on sailings built around the island call.

Where CocoCay Sits

Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private Royal Caribbean destination in the Berry Islands, a chain in the northern Bahamas. The island is only for Royal Caribbean guests on sailings that call there. Royal Caribbean counts 9 dining spots, 5 pools, 14 waterslides and 20 bars across the island.

It is not a port town. There is no local community to meet and no independent shops, because the whole destination is built and run for the ships that dock alongside.

How You Get Ashore

Ships dock at the island's own pier, so there is no tender ride. The walk from the ship to the CocoCay Arrivals Plaza takes about 6 minutes, and a free pier tram loops continuously if you would rather ride. Once ashore, the island tram runs every 15 minutes with 7 stops, leaving the Arrivals Plaza for South Beach, Oasis Lagoon and Breezy Bay.

Walk times from the plaza are about 3 minutes to Thrill Waterpark, 5 to Harbor Beach, 5 to 10 to Chill Island, 8 to Oasis Lagoon, 10 to South Beach and 10 to Coco Beach Club. Beach access wheelchairs are listed among the complimentary amenities.

Which Miami Ships Call Here

From Miami, Wonder of the Seas sails 3-night Bahamas and Perfect Day cruises calling at CocoCay and Nassau, and also runs 4-night versions. Freedom of the Seas sails 4-night and 5-night Bahamas cruises from Miami that include CocoCay. Looking further out, Hero of the Seas is listed to join the Miami lineup later on 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises that all include Perfect Day CocoCay, with the Western route running Miami, sea day, Costa Maya, Roatan, Cozumel, sea day, CocoCay, Miami.

Utopia of the Seas also calls on every sailing but departs Port Canaveral, not Miami. The full current ship list lives on the Royal Caribbean cruises from Miami page.

How Long You Get

Royal Caribbean says most ships dock at CocoCay for about 8 to 10 hours, which is a full day rather than a half-day stop. Sample sailings show the pattern: on a Wonder of the Seas 3-night cruise the ship is at CocoCay on Saturday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM before Nassau the next day. Restaurant hours on the island vary with the ship's arrival and departure times, so check the printed times in the Royal app on the morning you dock.

The Bahamas runs on Eastern Time with daylight saving, so no clock change from Miami.

What Is Free at CocoCay and What Costs Extra

Royal Caribbean states there is no admission fee to visit Perfect Day at CocoCay and that most experiences are complimentary. The table below compares the free areas and the paid ones side by side, using the free list and paid list on Royal Caribbean's own cost page.

The Free and Paid List at a Glance

The split is simple. Entry, the beaches, the lagoon pool, the kids' play areas, chairs and umbrellas, showers, the tram and unlimited dining at five island food spots cost nothing. What costs extra falls into two groups: ticketed areas (Thrill Waterpark, Hideaway Beach for ages 18 and over, Coco Beach Club, the Zip Line and the Up, Up and Away balloon) and rentals and extras (cabanas, daybeds, kayaks, snorkel gear and food at Captain Jack's).

Royal Caribbean publishes no dollar price for the waterpark or the beach club passes on its public pages, so prices are dynamic and shown per sailing in My Royal Cruise for booked guests.

What the Free Side Actually Covers

The complimentary list is generous. Oasis Lagoon, Captain Jill's Galleon, Splashaway Bay, Chill Island and South Beach come with free beach chairs and umbrellas, plus freshwater showers, tram service and beach access wheelchairs. Water and select basic juices are free at the island dining venues, and alcohol is extra unless a beverage package covers it.

Beach towels come from the ship and are swapped at towel exchanges near Oasis Lagoon, Coco Beach Club and Thrill Waterpark. Lockers are also listed as available, though no price is confirmed on the public pages.

How the Paid Side Works

Thrill Waterpark admission covers 13 waterslides, the Wave Pool, the Adventure Pool, dining and chairs with umbrellas, and children ages 0 to 3 get in free. Entry is by swiping the SeaPass card at the park entrance, and passes can be pre-purchased or bought on the island. A cabana rental at Coco Beach Club carries complimentary admission for up to 8 guests, which can be the cleaner way to buy into the club.

If weather cancels a paid activity, Royal Caribbean credits the onboard account at 100 percent for 4 hours or more lost, 50 percent for 2 to 4 hours and nothing for under 2 hours.

Perfect Day at CocoCay: Free Things to Do and Full Island Tour

A walk around Perfect Day at CocoCay, with the free areas and what costs extra. Third-party video by Sujanos Travel. This site did not shoot it and has no relationship with the creator.

CocoCay Area by Area

The island divides into clear zones. Each has a different crowd, and the walk times from the Arrivals Plaza decide the order of your day.

Chill Island and South Beach

Chill Island is the classic beach zone, 5 to 10 minutes from the Arrivals Plaza on foot, with rows of free beach chairs and umbrellas and the Chill Grill serving beachside BBQ, salads and tacos from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Snorkel Shack rents gear here for a fee, full-face masks are not stocked and you may bring your own mask and fins. South Beach sits about 10 minutes away and is another complimentary beach, also with free chairs and umbrellas.

Both are included, so they are the places to start when you want sand without spending anything.

Oasis Lagoon

Oasis Lagoon is billed as the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, about an 8-minute walk from the Arrivals Plaza. It has three swim-up islands, a swim-up bar and a sloped entry that suits families with small children. Chairs and shade around the lagoon are part of the free list, and the tram's Oasis Lagoon stop drops you close.

Because it is freshwater, it is a good midday swap when the ocean side turns choppy. Standard cabanas here hold up to 8 guests for a fee, and a towel exchange point near the lagoon handles swaps of the ship's towels.

Thrill Waterpark

Thrill Waterpark is the paid zone, only about 3 minutes from the Arrivals Plaza. Admission covers 13 waterslides, the Wave Pool billed as the largest wave pool in the Caribbean, the Adventure Pool with floating lily pads, a rock wall and two swing ropes, plus dining and chairs with umbrellas. The official island map shows a 135-foot slide billed as the tallest waterslide in the Caribbean, with rider minimum heights of 40, 42 or 48 inches depending on the slide.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by a ticketed guest aged 14 or older, and personal electronic devices including GoPros are not allowed on any slide.

Hideaway Beach

Hideaway Beach is the adults-only area for guests 18 and over, and it debuted in 2024. It is capped at 1,800 guests a day, which is the point: even on busy ship days the beach has a ceiling. The zone has a DJ pool, in-water hammocks, resort-style cabanas, a swim-up bar and a cabana-only infinity plunge pool called The Hideout.

Access needs a paid day pass, sold in My Royal Cruise with prices that vary by season rather than appearing on the public island page. The daily cap means passes can run out.

Coco Beach Club

Coco Beach Club, about a 10-minute walk from the Arrivals Plaza, is the upscale paid zone. It has an oceanfront infinity pool, a bar and a surf and turf restaurant that is complimentary with admission and open 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the official map. There are 20 overwater cabanas here of 675 square feet for up to 8 guests, and a cabana rental carries complimentary club admission for those guests.

If you want the club without the overwater price, a standard access pass is the route, priced per sailing in My Royal Cruise. The infinity pool and the restaurant are the two reasons most people pay.

Splashaway Bay and the Free Play Zones

Splashaway Bay is a complimentary aqua park for young children with slides, fountains, pools and drench buckets. Captain Jill's Galleon sits alongside as a free ship-themed play area with slides and water cannons, so kids who are too small for the waterpark still get a full water playground at no cost. Both zones sit close to the center of the island, which makes them easy to combine with an Oasis Lagoon swim or a Chill Island lunch without a long walk between stops.

Food and Drinks on CocoCay

Unlimited dining at five island food spots is included in your cruise fare, and drinks follow the ship's packages.

The Included Spots

The complimentary dining venues are Skipper's Grill with BBQ, salads, tacos and ice cream, Chill Grill with beachside BBQ, salads and tacos, and the Snack Shack at three locations serving burgers, hot dogs and salads. Map hours show Chill Grill running 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the Snack Shack 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a footnote that restaurant hours vary with the ship's arrival and departure times. Beer at the Snack Shack costs extra, so the free menu is food, water and select basic juices.

Eat inside the window, because once the listed hours end the included options close.

Drinks and Packages

Water and select basic juices come free at the island dining venues, and alcohol is extra unless a beverage package covers it. Royal Caribbean says a beverage package bought before the cruise or onboard includes all drinks on the island, which is a real difference from Carnival's island where onboard packages do not carry over. A VOOM internet package also works at CocoCay, so your ship Wi-Fi follows you ashore.

Captain Jack's is the one paid restaurant, with wings, fries and entrees charged separately alongside live music, open 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the map. Bring US dollar cash for the island market, as Royal Caribbean advises.

A Day at CocoCay, Step by Step

Ships usually dock for 8 to 10 hours. This order front-loads the popular spots before the crowds spread out.

  1. First hour

    Walk off early

The walk to the Arrivals Plaza takes about 6 minutes and the free pier tram loops continuously if you have small children or gear. Royal Caribbean's own planning advice is to arrive early to secure prime spots.

  2. Early morning

    Claim your paid area first

If you hold a Thrill Waterpark, Hideaway Beach or Coco Beach Club pass, go there first The waterpark is only 3 minutes from the plaza and the waterpark cabanas include tickets. Hideaway Beach caps at 1,800 guests a day, so early arrival protects your spot.

  3. Mid morning

    Free-beach time

If you are staying free all day, head to Chill Island, 5 to 10 minutes on foot, or take the tram to South Beach. Free chairs and umbrellas are first come first served. Grab ship towels before you disembark, and swap them at the towel exchange near Oasis Lagoon.

  4. Late morning

    Kids' play zones

Splashaway Bay and Captain Jill's Galleon are both free.

  5. Midday

    Lunch in the window

The included spots serve roughly 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. depending on the venue, and hours vary with the ship's schedule. Skipper's Grill, Chill Grill and the three Snack Shacks are all you can eat at no charge. Water and basic juices are free, beer at the Snack Shack is not.

  6. Afternoon

    Pool or lagoon hour

Move to Oasis Lagoon, about 8 minutes from the plaza, for the freshwater pool with a swim-up bar and sloped entry. It is the calmest swimming on the island when the ocean chop picks up, and the tram stops nearby.

  7. Late afternoon

One last swim and the walk back

Royal Caribbean advises mixing free areas with one or two paid upgrades rather than trying everything. Leave time for the walk or tram back to the ship, and follow the all-aboard time printed for your sailing. Bring the SeaPass card, since it is your ticket and your payment ashore.

CocoCay or Another Line's Island

CocoCay is one of several private islands on Bahamas cruises from Miami. The right one depends on which line you sail.

How It Stacks Up

CocoCay's edge is scale and inclusions: entry is free, dining at five spots is unlimited and included, your beverage package works ashore, and the paid layer is optional. Carnival's Celebration Key on Grand Bahama, which opened in 2025 after a $600 million build, takes the opposite approach, with onboard beverage packages not extending there and one complimentary Island Eats meal per person. Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay is adding a 28,000-square-foot pool, a new pier and an adults-only club.

MSC's Ocean Cay includes lunch but charges for water sports of $32 to $122 and cabanas of $252 to $452. The full lineup sits in the private islands section of the homepage, and Carnival's island has its own Celebration Key guide.

CocoCay Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Do bring the SeaPass card, ship towels, reef-safe sunscreen, UPF clothing and a hat or enclosed water shoes for the Zip Line, because Royal Caribbean lists exactly these items for a day ashore.
  • Do arrive early to secure prime spots, since the free chairs and umbrellas at Chill Island and South Beach are first come first served.
  • Do book paid passes and cabanas ahead, because cabana reservations open up to one year in advance and the overwater units at Coco Beach Club need the earliest booking.
  • Do check the hours in the Royal app on the morning you dock, since the included restaurants run roughly 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and shift with the ship's schedule.
  • Do leave buffer before all aboard, because the all-aboard time printed for your sailing is the one to follow.

Don't

  • Don't bring a GoPro or any personal electronic device onto the Thrill Waterpark slides, because they are banned on every slide.
  • Don't send a child under 14 into the waterpark alone, because they must be accompanied by a ticketed guest aged 14 or older.
  • Don't expect a published price list for the paid areas, because Royal Caribbean shows dynamic per-sailing prices only in My Royal Cruise.
  • Don't fly a drone from the ship or the island, because drones brought aboard must stay in the stateroom and are confiscated if flown from the ship.

Read what a call here involves in what the island is, alongside the other stops on Bahamas cruises from Miami.

Is Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas worth it?

The case for it is the 8 to 10 hours ashore, the free entry and food, and the fact that your beverage package and VOOM internet work on the island, per Royal Caribbean. The case against is that it is a resort zone rather than Bahamian culture, unlike a Nassau call. Compare it with the line's alternatives in the private islands section.

Where can I find a CocoCay map with walk times?

Royal Caribbean publishes an official wayfinding map, and its FAQ gives the walk times: about 3 minutes to Thrill Waterpark, 5 to Harbor Beach, 5 to 10 to Chill Island, 8 to Oasis Lagoon, 10 to South Beach and 10 to Coco Beach Club, with the island tram every 15 minutes across 7 stops.
