MSC Cruises from Miami

MSC cruises from Miami sail out of Terminal AA at PortMiami, the line's own $300 million building that opened in 2025. Every Bahamas itinerary includes Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, MSC's private island, and the winter program runs from a 3-night short break to 7-night Caribbean loops. This guide covers the terminal, the ships and routes, what is included and what costs extra at Ocean Cay, the Nassau day, parking at Garage AA and the documents you need to board. It is an independent guide, so ships are booked with MSC and the tours named here are booked separately. For the wider market, see all cruises from Miami or start at Bahamas cruises from Miami.

Quick answer MSC from Miami at a glance

MSC sails its Bahamas cruises from Miami out of Terminal AA at PortMiami, a $300 million terminal that opened in 2025 with berths for two ships at once. Every Bahamas sailing from Miami calls at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, where lunch on the island is complimentary and water sports run $32 to $122. The short program uses MSC Seaside on 3 and 4 nights to Ocean Cay and Nassau, while MSC World America runs 7-night Caribbean routes that also include Ocean Cay.

Key takeaways

MSC Terminal AA at PortMiami

MSC uses Terminal AA on the north side of PortMiami, a short drive from downtown Miami across Biscayne Bay.

The Building

Terminal AA opened in 2025 as a $300 million building covering 16.7 acres. PortMiami describes it as a 490,000 square foot, four-level terminal and the largest cruise terminal in the world, able to hold up to three ships and process up to 36,000 passengers in a single day. The terminal has two berths for simultaneous turnarounds. It sits on the north side of the port next to the other modern terminals, with Terminal A (Royal Caribbean) nearby and Carnival using Terminals D, E and F. PortMiami itself handled 8,564,225 cruise passengers in its latest fiscal year, the highest annual count in its history, so arrive with time to spare on busy days.

The port is part of the Shore Power Program together with MSC, Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages and Florida Power and Light, which lets docked ships plug into shore electricity.

Parking at Garage AA

MSC passengers park at Garage AA, the garage on the north side of the port. Garage AA charges $35 per day for long-term parking, which is more than the $25 per day charged at Garages C, D, F, G and Surface Lot E. Parking needs no reservation, attendants are staffed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on cruise days, and payment takes cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. Disabled parking is free for vehicles with specialized equipment, and disabled veterans with Florida plates park free.

PortMiami recommends dropping luggage and passengers first, then parking the car. Full rates and lots are covered in Port of Miami cruise terminal parking.

Getting There

PortMiami sits on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay and is reached from I-395 and the MacArthur Causeway through the toll-free Port of Miami Tunnel. The GPS address for the port is 1015 North America Way, Miami, FL 33132. Miami International Airport is listed at 7.1 miles away and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International at 25.7 miles, with the airport run taking about 25 minutes off-peak and 50 minutes or more around 8am or 5pm. Rideshare and taxis use designated pick-up and drop-off zones at every cruise terminal, and a rideshare from Miami airport to the port runs roughly $25 to $45. The only public transit that goes directly to the port is the free Coral Way Route Trolley, boarded at Government Center Station downtown, though it stops at Terminal J and Terminal E rather than Terminal AA. From Fort Lauderdale airport the Brightline train takes about 38 minutes to MiamiCentral, then about 10 minutes by rideshare to the port.

If you want a fixed price and luggage help, the pick is Miami Private Transfer to the Cruise Port at $70 per person one way, a private vehicle with 60 minutes of free airport waiting and flight monitoring.

Boarding and Disembarking

Typical embarkation at PortMiami runs about 11:00 to 15:30 and typical disembarkation clears the ship between 07:00 and 10:00, so book flights home for after midday. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest embarkation days. Porters are tipped about $2 to $5 per checked bag, the port has no storage lockers, and there are no on-site rental car agencies, though some agencies run shuttles.

MSC Ships and Routes from Miami

MSC's Miami program runs from a 3-night short Bahamas loop to 7-night Caribbean itineraries, and every Bahamas cruise includes Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Which Ships Sail from Miami

MSC's own Miami page lists MSC World America, MSC Seashore and MSC Seaside as the ships sailing from the city, with MSC Poesia and MSC Meraviglia there for a limited time. For winter 2026-27 the working pair is MSC World America on 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises and MSC Seaside on 3 and 4 night Bahamas cruises to Ocean Cay and Nassau. MSC World America is a big ship: 216,638 gross tons, 6,762 guests and 2,138 crew, delivered in 2025. MSC Meraviglia also appears on 4-night Bahamas itineraries from Miami that call at Ocean Cay. MSC Poesia reaches Miami on a 20-night Panama Canal repositioning cruise from Seattle in 2026. MSC's page also shows MSC Seashore at 6 nights from Miami, but its 4-night Ocean Cay sailings are reported to leave from Port Canaveral, so only World America and Seaside are confirmed for winter 2026-27. A later move of Seashore to Miami is listed for 6 to 9 night Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas cruises in 2027.

The table below compares the Miami ships, the trip lengths and where each route goes, using MSC's own Miami and Ocean Cay pages.

ShipNightsWhere it goes
MSC Seaside3 and 4Bahamas: Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Nassau
MSC Meraviglia (limited time)4Bahamas: Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve
MSC World America7Eastern Caribbean (Puerto Plata, San Juan, Ocean Cay) or Western Caribbean (Roatan, Costa Maya, Cozumel, Ocean Cay)
MSC Seashore6Listed for 6-night Miami sailings, but its 4-night Ocean Cay sailings may leave from Port Canaveral
MSC Seashore (listed for 2027)6 to 9Eastern Caribbean and Bahamas

How the Routes Work

The 3-night sailing is a fast loop with Ocean Cay as the port focus. The 4-night version adds Nassau, and on select 4-night sailings the ship stays overnight at Ocean Cay, so there is time on the island after dark. The 7-night World America routes alternate between an Eastern loop through Puerto Plata and San Juan and a Western loop through Roatan, Costa Maya and Cozumel, with Ocean Cay on both.

Fares are per person and change daily, so check MSC's site for a live price. If you want a shortest-possible test of a Bahamas sailing, the 3 day Bahamas cruise from Miami page compares the short options across lines.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

Ocean Cay is MSC's private island and the reason many people pick these sailings. Only MSC ships visit it.

The Island

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve sits about 20 miles south of Bimini and, depending on the source, 65 to 95 miles from Miami, and the protected water around it covers 64 square miles. MSC counts 8 beaches, 12 bars, 7 dining venues, 37 cabanas and a marine conservation center on the island. Ships dock at Ocean Cay's own pier, so passengers walk straight off by gangway and an electric tram carries them toward the beaches.

MSC advertises the only LED lighthouse show in The Bahamas, which matters most on the sailings that stay late or overnight. The Bahamas departure tax for cruise passengers leaving by sea is $23, or $25 from a private destination, and commercial carriers usually include it in the fare.

What Is Included and What Costs Extra

Lunch at Ocean Cay is complimentary. MSC's included list covers the beaches, island flavors, wellness and sports, and kid-friendly fun, and an electric tram carries you from the pier. The extras are the water sports and the shade. Water sports rentals run $32 to $122 and cabanas run $252 to $452. MSC's own excursion list includes a Stingray and Snorkel Combo of about 3 hours to Brown's Cay with a 45 minute boat ride out and 25 back, which requires age 6 and swimming ability, and a Bahamian Sunset Cruise of about 2 hours with a rum punch and a 35 minute beach stop at Brown's Cay that requires age 18.

The figures below come from the island overview reporting and MSC's Ocean Cay pages.

ItemCost
Lunch on the islandComplimentary
Tram from the pierIncluded
Water sports$32 to $122
Cabanas$252 to $452
Bahamas departure tax on cruise calls$23, usually in the fare

The Overnight Calls

Overnight stays at Ocean Cay are offered on select 4-night sailings, which turns the island from a beach stop into an evening event with the lighthouse show and the bars running late. If an evening on the island is the point of the trip, filter MSC's 4-night departures for the overnight version rather than assuming all of them stay. On the regular calls the ship still ties up at the pier for the day, so there is no tendering at any point.

The Nassau Day on an MSC Cruise

On the 4-night itinerary the Nassau call is the second port, and Prince George Wharf puts downtown Nassau within a short walk of the gangway.

What Is Walkable from the Pier

MSC ships dock at Nassau Cruise Port at Prince George Wharf, which had its grand opening in 2023 after a $300 million rebuild and holds six ships at once. From the port exit it is a few steps to the Straw Market, 2 to 5 minutes to Bay Street shops, 13 minutes to Junkanoo Beach and 13 minutes to the Queen's Staircase on the port's own chart, plus 5 to 15 minutes extra for the pier walk depending on your berth. Parliament Square is a 2-minute walk and the Pirates of Nassau museum about 8.

The port lists the Water Tower as closed to the public, and the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle have been reported closed for renovation since 2025, so confirm before planning a climb. Nassau taxis are unmetered and fares should be agreed before boarding, there is no Uber or Lyft, and a taxi to Atlantis is quoted from $15 up to $35 depending on the source. The Paradise Island water taxi is about 10 minutes each way and priced around $7 per person by the tourism board.

Tours Worth Booking

If you want animals and beach time rather than shopping, the tours that leave from near the port are the practical answer. The table compares the Nassau trips sold on this site, their prices and durations.

TourPriceDurationStarts from
Nassau Food and Walking Tour$993 hoursParliament Street, near the port
Nassau Electric Trolley Culture Tour$552.5 hoursStraw Market, cruise port side
Nassau Island Highlights Sightseeing Tour$802.5 hoursPort gate, next to the Tourism Police Station
Rose Island Pig Beach and Private Beach Club$1294 hoursSenor Frogs dock
Nassau Swimming Pigs, Reef Snorkel and Turtles by Powerboat$2454 hoursMargaritaville on Paradise Island
Exuma Powerboat Day Trip from Nassau$328.909 hoursParadise Island Ferry Terminal

Choosing Between Them

The Exuma powerboat day is the biggest ticket at $328.90 for 9 hours with iguanas, sharks, stingrays, swimming pigs, lunch and a full bar, but it needs a morning start (check-in is at 8:45 AM) and a port call long enough for 9 hours, so check your ship's Nassau hours before booking a 9-hour product. For most 4-night MSC calls, the shorter options fit better. The pick for a first visit is Rose Island Pig Beach and Private Beach Club at $129 for 4 hours, which includes the pig encounter, a Bahamian lunch, snorkel gear and paddle boards and leaves from the Senor Frogs dock.

Free options exist too: Junkanoo Beach is free to enter and the John Watling's Distillery offers a free walk-in tour with a cocktail sample from 10am to 6pm.

MSC from Miami: Dos and Don'ts

Do

  • Do book an overnight Ocean Cay 4-night sailing if the island is the main draw, because the late and overnight calls are only on select departures.
  • Do drop luggage at the terminal before parking, because PortMiami recommends it and Garage AA charges $35 per day either way.
  • Do bring an original or certified birth certificate plus a government photo ID if you skip the passport, since MSC lists exactly those documents for US citizens on closed-loop cruises and denies boarding without them, with no refund.
  • Do book Nassau tours that start near Prince George Wharf, because the port exit is 2 to 5 minutes from Bay Street and a few steps from the Straw Market.
  • Do check MSC's documents page for every traveller in the cabin, since US and Canadian children under 16 need a government-issued birth certificate and hospital or baptismal papers are refused.

Don't

  • Don't plan to arrive at PortMiami by bus or Metrorail alone, because the only direct public transit is the Coral Way Trolley from Government Center and it stops at Terminal J and E, not Terminal AA.
  • Don't budget a fixed MSC service charge figure from third-party guides, because no verified MSC gratuity amount is published for these sailings, so confirm onboard charges with the line.
  • Don't assume every 4-night sailing stays overnight at Ocean Cay, because the overnight is only on select departures.
  • Don't book the 9-hour Exuma powerboat day without checking your Nassau port hours, because a short call will not fit a 9-hour tour.

MSC Cruises from Miami: FAQ

Where does the MSC cruise go from Miami?

The short sailings go to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Nassau in the Bahamas, with 3-night and 4-night itineraries on MSC Seaside and, for a limited time, MSC Meraviglia. The 7-night MSC World America cruises alternate an Eastern Caribbean loop through Puerto Plata and San Juan with a Western loop through Roatan, Costa Maya and Cozumel, and Ocean Cay appears on both. Route details are in the ships section above and on the Bahamas cruises from Miami homepage.

Is MSC a high end cruise line?

MSC's Miami fleet spans a wide range. The base ships sail short Bahamas loops, while MSC World America is a 216,638 gross ton flagship carrying 6,762 guests, and the MSC Yacht Club is a keycard-only ship within a ship with 24/7 butler service, a private restaurant and the Top Sail Lounge if you want the upscale tier. What MSC is known for at every level is its private island, where every Bahamas cruise includes Ocean Cay.

Is MSC nicer than Royal Caribbean?

Both lines sail big modern ships from Miami and both are mainstream rather than premium, so the honest answer is that it depends on the ship and the itinerary rather than the brand. Royal Caribbean runs its short Bahamas cruises around Perfect Day at CocoCay, a Royal Caribbean private island where entry is free and most experiences are complimentary. MSC's answer is Ocean Cay, where lunch is complimentary but water sports run $32 to $122 and cabanas $252 to $452. Compare the ships, the island and the fare rather than the logos.

Which terminal does MSC use at PortMiami?

MSC uses Terminal AA, its own $300 million building that opened in 2025. It is a 490,000 square foot, four-level terminal described by the port as the largest cruise terminal in the world, with two berths and capacity for up to 36,000 passengers in a day. Parking is at Garage AA at $35 per day, and the port's GPS address is 1015 North America Way.

Do I need a passport for an MSC Bahamas cruise from Miami?

Not always. MSC says US citizens on domestic closed-loop cruises need a passport, a passport card, or an original or certified birth certificate with an unexpired government photo ID, and it prefers a passport valid 6 months after the cruise. US and Canadian children under 16 need a government-issued birth certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and hospital and baptismal papers are not accepted. MSC also notes that voter registration and Social Security cards are not proof of citizenship and guests without proper documents are denied boarding with no refund. Full rules are in the passport for a Bahamas cruise guide.

Is there an MSC terminal in Freeport?

One is planned. In 2026 the Bahamas government and MSC Cruises announced a $450 million cruise terminal on an existing artificial island in Freeport Harbour, with multiple berths, food and retail areas and a transport coordination centre, though no construction timeline was given. MSC Group's CTL Maritime has also signed to redevelop 20 acres of the former Grand Lucayan Reef Village into an MSC Beach Club, with demolition reported underway. Until those open, MSC ships from Miami call at Ocean Cay and Nassau rather than Freeport, and the current Grand Bahama cruise port is used by Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and other lines.

Getting to Terminal AA is the easy part when the ride is booked before you fly in.
